Ocean Exploration: Aboard the Nautilus

The vast majority of our planet is covered by water, however, we have more knowledge about the surface of Mars than the depths of our oceans. There are only a handful of academic research ships with the capacity to explore the ocean depths, and even fewer that allow anyone who desires to share in the discoveries in real time. E/V Nautilus, owned and operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, is one such ship.

Ocean Exploration: Aboard the NautilusIn 2016 Dr. Amber Hale had the opportunity to serve as a Science Communication Fellow with Ocean Exploration Trust and sail aboard the Nautilus. She will discuss the importance of ocean exploration and some of the challenges faced by researchers. In addition to the expedition overview she will discuss some of the technology used on the expedition, including remote operated vehicles, telepresence, and multibeam sonar. The fascinating life aboard the ship will be covered. Lastly, Hale will discuss bringing the excitement of ocean exploration to our community. Through this association she has spoken to several area schools and organizations, and is helping develop STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum to inspire students to pursue STEM careers.

Beautiful and inspiring photographs of ocean life taken miles below the surface will be featured throughout.
